Don't bite off more than you can chew
We have had a nice cool spring this year. It makes me wonder if it is the lull before the heat of summer punch. Don’t be fooled by all the beautiful blooms for sale and buy more than you can hand-water in July. A good way to manage your purchases is start with a large pot you can easily water, and buy only the number of plants that it will hold comfortably.
Protect Plants: Always side dress plants with at least a one-inch layer of compost before laying down mulch, so as the mulch decomposes it will not draw nitrogen from surrounding plants, thereby causing a nitrogen tie-up, resulting in iron chlorosis. A layer of mulch cuts down on weeding and makes those that do grow, easier to pull. Mulching also holds in moisture, which is crucial for your plants through the summer. For those of you who don’t have a large compost pile to draw from, purchase mulch already mixed half and half with compost for one step application.
