College Soccer: Bobcats rally to beat the Huskies
A slow start didn’t deter Texas State in an exhibition match against Houston Baptist last Saturday.
Kat Conner’s team fell behind early, but rallied late for a 3-2 win over the Huskies. Clarissa Leon scored two goals in her debut, including the clincher.
Leon’s game-winning goal occurred near the end of first overtime as she was going towards the endline. She was taken down by a Houston Baptist defender on the right side of the box and was rewarded with a penalty kick, which she converted.
Earlier in the second half, Leon started the scoring for the Bobcats in the 54th minute after chasing down a free kick off the foot of Brenna Smith. Leon got the ball just outside the 18-yard box and shot it into the left corner to make it 2-1.
Twenty minutes later as time wound down in regulation, Lynsey Curry touched a ball into the center of the box for senior Gabbi Cottee who one-timed it home, tying the game at 2-all.
Texas State will now focus its attention on the regular season, which begins against two former Southland Conference rivals, Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin, Aug. 23-25 on the road. The Bobcats won their last Southland Conference Tournament championship in 2011, hosted by Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., against Stephen F. Austin.
