College Baseball: Bobcats trying to get on right track

Starting the season with a 2-6 record while losing five of their last six games — including the past three — the Texas State baseball team is in dire need of some confidence-building momentum.

Considering Northern Kentucky is 1-6 on the season, this weekend’s home series against the Norse is a prime opportunity for the Bobcats to get on track. The first game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight, followed by a 4 p.m. game on Saturday and an 11 a.m. start on Sunday.

Texas State suffered its third straight loss Tuesday, falling 7-2 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, while Northern Kentucky has dropped consecutive games to Northwestern and Saint Louis and is 0-4 on the road. Texas State has yet to play series on the road, as this weekend marks the third home series for the Bobcats. Texas State is 2-4 at Bobcat Ballpark.

A struggling offense is one of the biggest reasons for the Bobcats’ early-season woes, as Texas State is only hitting .194 as a team, while opponents are hitting .231. Sophmore outfielder Cody Lovejoy (.364) and sophomore infielder Garrett Mattlage (.333) are the only Bobcats hitting above .300 on a team that has been accustomed to scoring a lot of runs the past few seasons.
