General Edward Burleson, hero of the Texas Revolution, vice president of the Republic of Texas, state senator and a founder of San Marcos, is honored by the city of San Marcos and the Moon-McGehee Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas with a proclamation of March 5 as General Edward Burleson Day. His original cabin was built in 1848 overlooking Spring Lake and he built the first dam on the San Marcos River in 1849 for a gristmill, creating the lake at the headwaters of the river.
