High School Volleyball: Lady Rattlers split matches at Floresville Tournament
From Staff Reports
FLORESVILLE— The San Marcos Lady Rattlers continue to gain valuable experience as Michelle Moreno’s team prepares for the start of its District 27-5A season this week.
San Marcos participated in the Floresville Tournament last weekend.
In Saturday’s tournament action, the Lady Rattlers split their matches against Corpus Christi Moody and Eagle Pass.
San Marcos notched a 2-1 victory over the Lady Eagles (24-26, 25-9, 26-24).
In their match, the Lady Rattlers saw a solid effort for their two main juniors — libero Katherine Reeves and middle blocker Kile Coleman. Reeves led the team with 21 digs, while Coleman finished just short of a double-double with eight digs and 11 kills.
With the win, San Marcos improved its record during the Floresville Tournament to 3-3 and is 9-7 overall.
The Lady Rattlers began the tournament with last Friday’s pool play round, which included a busy slate of four games. San Marcos went 2-2 and finished third in its pool.
The Lady Rattlers’ first game of the tournament came against San Antonio Holmes where Moreno’s team lost 2-0 (25-17, 25-7). San Marcos bounced back in its next game against San Antonio Edison with a 2-1 victory (25-17, 25-14, 28-26).
Senior Kayla Banks and Coleman led the team to the victory with hitting averages above .300 during the match.
Coleman had 12 kills and Banks added four more. San Marcos also received a strong match from senior D’Nauzscha Nichols who added seven kills to top the Golden Bears. Reeves accounted for more than half of her team’s total digs with 22 and provided leadership on the back line, which Moreno’s team needs moving forward.
The Lady Rattlers lost their third pool game last Friday to Laredo United by a score of 2-0 (25-13, 25-22). San Marcos finished up pool play with a 2-0 victory (25-23, 25-12) over Universal City Randolph.
