SAN ANTONIO — San Marcos had San Antonio-O’Connor on the ropes.
Just about every punch the Lady Rattlers threw last weekend landed and they blocked just about every counter from the Lady Panthers. Nobody expected San Marcos, a heavy underdog, to last until last Saturday’s decisive game against the fourth-ranked team in the state; but then again, how can someone measure heart?
After nearly seven hours and 23 innings of softball in three days, all the Lady Rattlers had to do to complete the upset was get one out. If San Marcos found a way to retire Kenedy Urbany or Lauryn Donnelly, Cathy Stoughton’s team would have advanced to the regional quarterfinal of the Class 5A playoffs.
That out never came until the Lady Rattlers’ jubilation gave way to heartbreak.
San Marcos watched O’Connor score four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning and its rally in the home half fell short. An almost storybook ending turned into a crushing 7-4 loss for the Lady Rattlers.
