Last week, San Marcos junior Mattye Mason entered the second round of the Region IV, Class 5A Golf Tournament in good shape after shooting a personal-best 72 at the Brackenridge Golf Course.
If Mason continued her strong play the next day, she’d earn an elusive berth in the upcoming state tournament. Mason needed to finish as one of the four best individuals not on a first- or second-place team.
Weather turned out to be the greatest equalizer, as it wreaked havoc on all competitors. Mason struggled in the final round of the tournament, as she carded an 83.
Despite the second-day problems, Mason finished in 13th place. That is 12 places better than she placed as a sophomore (25th) and loads better than her outing as a freshman (110th).
