Snakes tie, win after first day of Classic
The San Marcos Rattlers displayed some offensive and defensive resiliency in the first day of the CenturyLink Rattler Classic Thursday, rallying back from an eight-run deficit to tie Kerrville-Tivy in the opener, 10-10, followed by a 2-0 shutout over San Antonio-Antonian.
San Marcos trailed 9-1 after the top of the fourth against Tivy before rallying back with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning. Noel Zapata came through with a 3-RBI double, while Tucker Smith also smacked a double to score two runs. David Hamilton, Elijah Perez and Cruz Rodriguez also posted RBIs in the inning.
Hamilton tied the game with RBI double in the bottom of the sixth that fell just short of the left-field fence, as the game was called after six innings due to a two-hour tournament time limit.
San Marcos’ bats were quiet in the second game against Antonian, collecting only two hits. But solid defense and steady pitching from SMHS starter Jaime Perez, along with relievers Daniel Mata and Mike Masters allowed SMHS to hold the Apaches to only two hits through seven innings.
“The sign of a good ball club is that you can come back when you need to and hold leads when you need to,” SMHS head baseball coach Bryan Webb said. “We saw both of those things today.”
