Mamie Lou Hughes

Mamie Lou Hughes, 88, of San Marcos, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at home with her loving family by her side.
Mamie was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Stockton, Ala., the second of five children born to Henry and Mamie Lee Pipkin.
Mamie is preceded in death by her husband James Marshall Hughes and daughter Susan Hughes Cole.
Mamie received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Montevallo Women's College in Alabama and went on to earn a master's degree in education from Columbia University in New York.
After completing her master's degree she accepted a teaching position at The University of Texas where she met and married her husband Marshall Hughes.
In 1960, they moved to San Marcos, where Marshall joined the physical education department at Texas State University (at the time SWTSU) and continued teaching until his death in 1975. After Marshall's death, Mamie began teaching the physical education activity classes at Texas State University which she truly enjoyed until her retirement in 1991.
Upon her retirement, Mamie joined the Central Texas Medical Center Auxiliary, where she quickly became an active volunteer. Mamie looked forward to her regular Monday afternoon shift and often substituted for other volunteers when needed. She truly enjoyed volunteering and treasured the many friends she made there.
Above all, Mamie was a very loving and completely devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved the outdoors and all that nature has to offer. She was a truly kind and caring person, and to know her was to love her. She will forever hold a special place in all of our hearts.
