HS Baseball: Rattlers bounce back at Comal ISD Classic
NEW BRAUNFELS — The San Marcos Ratters turned the tide in impressive fashion Friday, posting a pair of wins on the second day of the Comal ISD Classic.
After opening the tournament with an 8-3 loss to Calallen, Class 4A’s top-ranked team, on Thursday, the Snakes bounced back with a 5-1 win over El Paso-Parkland in the morning, followed by a 12-4 victory over Boerne-Champion, 4A’s sixth-ranked team.
“It was good to see our kids come back strong from the Calallen loss,” SMHS head coach Bryan Webb said. “Our guys are beginning to understand they can compete at the high level we’ll need in order to be successful in district.”
David Hamilton posted San Marcos’ first home run of the season with his two-run shot over the right-field fence against Parkland in the top of the first, while RBIs from Chuy Rodriguez, Elijah Perez and Carlos Villasana allowed SMHS to put three more runs on the board in the sixth.
San Marcos jumped on Champion with five runs in the second inning and never looked back. Two walks and a hit batter with the bases loaded gave San Marcos its first three runs, while Hamilton came through with a 2-RBI double into right field.
Champion cut the lead to two with three runs in the bottom of the third, but SMHS answered with a run in the third, five in the fifth and another in the sixth to score the decisive win.
Jesus Rodriguez drove Villasana in the third, while the Rattlers got 2-RBI singles from Tucker Smith and D.A. Tobias — along with an RBI from Villasana — in the fifth.
Colin Gonzales drove in the Rattlers’ final run in the top of the sixth.
Mike Masters led the Rattlers on the hill against Champion, giving up one hit over three innings with two strikeouts and five walks. Daniel Mata threw two innings in relief, giving up one run on one hit.
San Marcos (6-3-1) was scheduled to close out the tournament with a noon game against San Antonio-O’Connor, followed by an afternoon game against St. Michael’s.
