Before opening District 25-5A play, the San Marcos Rattlers had no problems scoring runs, leading all of the league’s teams in runs scored. But through three games, San Marcos had scored only five runs, all coming in a 5-4 win over New Braunfels.

Thursday night against Wagner, the Snakes’ bats came alive early and often, as SMHS belted San Antonio-Wagner for a 9-0 district win at Rattler Field.

San Marcos jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first, then tacked on three more in the bottom of the fifth, collecting eight hits off Wagner pitchers Leonardo Dominguez and Alex Maciel.

The Rattlers shined defensively too, as SMHS starter Chance Laidley improved to 6-0 on the season after allowing just one hit through five innings, with eight strikeouts and four walks.

But the one thing the Rattlers failed to do was run-rule the Thunderbirds when given the opportunity in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
