Fred Henry Stern
Fred H. Stern died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013 at the age of 100.
Fred was born Aug. 3, 1912, the son of Otto F. and Bertha Kolwes Stern. He grew up in the Brenham area and shared farm life with his brother Erwin.
He graduated from Brenham High School and attended both Blinn College and the University of Texas in the field of business administration. The majority of his working career as an accountant was at both the International Harvester Corporation and the Fluor Corporation in Houston.
He was baptized on Oct. 27, 1912 at Phillipsburg Lutheran Church and was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Brenham on April 1, 1928.
On Oct. 3, 1937 Fred and Lucile Lehrmann were married at Salem Lutheran Church near Brenham. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Fred Robert and John Kenneth.
The family participated in the life of Zion Lutheran Church where Fred was active in the Lutheran Brotherhood organization, the Church Council and served many years as church treasurer and financial secretary.
After 57 years of a wonderful, Christian marriage, Lucile died on Jan. 10, 1995. In 2003, Fred moved to San Marcos to the Emeritus Assisted Living community and became a member of First Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his retirement in Houston and in San Marcos, especially playing golf and being with family.
Fred is survived by his two sons, Fred Robert (Bob) Stern and wife Marilyn of Austin and the Reverend John K. Stern and wife Karen of San Marcos. Fred celebrated the joys of his extended family and especially five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be at First Lutheran Church, San Marcos on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham.
