College Hoops: Crunch time for the Bobcats

Neither Doug Davalos nor Zenarae Antoine would say their team’s season went according to plan.

Through 14 conference games, both the men and women sit near the bottom of the Western Athletic Conference with identical 3-11 records. Davalos’ team finds itself in eighth, while the women are ninth.

“We’re obviously out of contention for winning the conference regular-season championship, but we need to prepare ourselves for making a run at the conference tournament,” Antoine said. “In doing that, we can find momentum we need right now.”

Even though Antoine’s statement clearly referred to her own team, both the men and women are in the same boat.
On the men’s side, Texas State is still looking to regain its swagger at home.

Entering tonight’s tilt with last-place Seattle University, the Bobcats dropped seven consecutive games inside Strahan Coliseum, including last Saturday’s horrendous loss to Texas-San Antoino.

“We can’t have teams coming in here thinking, ‘This is going to be an easy win,’” Texas State junior guard Deonte’ Jones said. “We definitely can’t come out flat: that’s what we did against UTSA. We have to come out and hit them in the mouth first.”
