NEW ORLEANS — A melancholy feeling hit Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione when he attended the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Football Media Day.

“I don’t want to say it was like a funeral, but it was bittersweet,” Franchione said in a phone interview. “Now it’s exciting, because we’re in the here and now — and in the Sun Belt.

“July 1 was supposedly the first day we actually got in the Sun Belt, but this is the first event that signifies our spot in the new conference. Our future lies here right now.”
